    The Brauer-Manin Obstruction and Sha[2].

    Get PDF
We discuss the Brauer-Manin obstruction on del Pezzo surfaces of degree 4. We outline a detailed algorithm for computing the obstruction and provide associated programs in magma. This is illustrated with the computation of an example with an irreducible cubic factor in the singular locus of the defining pencil of quadrics (in contrast to previous examples, which had at worst quadratic irreducible factors). We exploit the relationship with the Tate-Shafarevich group to give new types of examples of Sha[2], for families of curves of genus 2 of the form y^2 = f(x), where f(x) is a quintic containing an irreducible cubic factor

Faces of Immigration: The American Dream is Not Dead

    Get PDF
Since the beginning of the history of the United States, we have been a nation not of one people but of many. Immigrants from across the globe have come to the U.S. bringing their cultures and histories with them; making this country the proverbial “melting pot” that it is today. This thesis looks at the United States’ immigration policy through featuring three people from Middle Eastern countries who are linked to the immigration process. These stories give insight into the immigration process of the US and the adjustment of Arab immigrants to life in America in a post 9/11 world

The Value of Student Services and Activities at a Large, Rural, Two-Year College in the Midwest

In order to assist in the development and growth of students to reach their maximum potential research into what services and activities students perceive as valuable was conducted. The purpose was to explore student\u27s relations between the perceived value of student services/activities and the knowledge, use, and value of student services and activities. The literature expresses that many factors affect a student\u27s experience at college. Student involvement occurs through many facets, academics, socialization, and environment. Student satisfaction with these factors impact student success or failure. The research demonstrates that students need interactions with the college community in order to facilitate positive outcomes and retain students through graduation. A quantitative study was conducted to explore what activities and services students participate, what activities students want to participate, the student services they utilized and the value of those services and activities, as well as, how the students perceived those activities as having positively contributed to their self-perceived success. The survey was administered to 263 students during the Spring 2012 semester at a large, rural, public, two-year college in the Midwest. The results demonstrated that the majority of students did think or feel that participation in college activities did positively affect their success

The first part is the fourth supplement to the 1992 Catalog of the Scolytidae and Platypodidae (Coleoptera) of the World (Wood and Bright 1992) and summarizes the additions and corrections that have affected the nomenclature of the family for the years 2011 through 2019. New synonymy proposed in this supplement: Dryocoetes caryi Hopkins (=Dryocoetes sechelti Swaine); Lymantor decipiens (LeConte) (=Lymantor alaskanus Wood). New combinations proposed in this supplement: Ancipitis scabrior (Schedl) from Xyleborus; Beaverium obstipus (Schedl) from Xyleborus; Beaverium rufus (Schedl) from Xyleborus; Cyclorhipidion inaqualis (Schedl) from Xyleborus; Debus amphicranoiodes (Hagedorn) from Xyleborus; Euwallacea pseudorudis (Schedl) from Xyleborus; Euwallacea sublinearis (Eggers) from Xyleborus; Planiculus subdolosus (Schedl) from Xyleborus; Pseudowebbia bakoensis (Browne) from Webbia; Pseudowebbia quattuordecimspinatus (Sampson) from Webbia. New status proposed in this supplement: Dendroctonus barberi Hopkins is removed from synonymy with Dendroctonus brevicomis LeConte and placed as a subspecies of D. brevicomis; Euwallacea kuroshio Gomez and Hulcr, Xyleborus whitfordiodendrus (Schedl) and E. fornicatior (Eggers) are placed as subspecies of Euwallacea fornicatus (Eichhoff). New name proposed in this supplement: Ambrosiophilus incertissimus for Xyleborus incertus Schedl 1969, not Schedl 1963. New distribution records are given for 130 species. The second part of this paper is a checklist of the world Scolytidae (Coleoptera) consisting of 280 genera, of which 17 are fossils, and 7829 species, of which 61 are fossils. Generic and specific names that are currently recognized are listed along with their synonyms, if any. Thinking Locally, Acting Globally: Global Health at the University of Vermont

    Get PDF
Published by the Dana Medical Library at the University of Vermont, this electronic exhibit explores the Global Health programs that have developed in affiliation with UVM departments and colleges. With input from enthusiastic physicians, nurses, professors and students, we gain an understanding of the broader Global Health mission as well as get a sense of the focus of each individual UVM program and initiative. From fighting Ebola in Liberia to curriculum supported international residencies in New Zealand, there is a movement toward international collaboration to promote public health and prevent disease. Health care professionals as well as educators strive to create pathways of communication that will improve, educate, and build in those parts of the world that need improved health care facilities as well as up to date information and technology. This is the gift that technology gives us: the ability to travel, communicate and improve lives on a global level

Incorporating Critical Thinking Skills Into the Language Arts Curriculum, Particularly in the Field of Detective Fiction

    Get PDF
In this age of accelerated change and continuing complexity, there is a widely-recognized need to incorporate critical thinking skills into all aspects of everyday life and not simply as an optional philosophy class at the post-secondary level of American education. Chapter One of this culminating project investigates the historical roots of critical thinking, with a brief investigation into the history of bow education in America (with slight digressions such as Alcott/Emerson\u27s Temple School and John Dewey\u27s Chicago experiments) has historically failed to foster the development of critical thinking skills in America\u27s students by its centuries old tradition of emphasizing rote memorization, passive learning, and social indoctrination. Chapter Two discusses how the realization of the importance of critical thinking skills has affected teacher education programs and has rekindled debates regarding the content versus process approach to including critical thinking skills in the curriculum. This chapter also investigates the current renaissance regarding wait-time and the importance of cooperative learning in the classroom. Echoing Ralph Waldo Emerson\u27s :sentiments regarding education, Chapter Three discusses techniques to foster creative and critical reading skills in the high school student as well as critical thinking skills. Included in this chapter are lateral thinking puzzles, word games, and exercises to stimulate critical thinking. Chapter Four investigates the application of critical thinking exercises into a discussion of one of the most popular literary genres, detective fiction. This chapter also provides a transcript of the actual implementation of this approach in a Detective Fiction class at Saint Francis Borgia Regional High School in Washington, Missouri. Chapter Five reiterates the guiding principles of the Center for Critical Thinking and Moral Critique and how they apply to the inclusion of critical thinking skills into the language arts curriculum, specifically in the field of detective fiction

Discourse and identity in a corpus of lesbian erotica

    Get PDF
This article uses corpus linguistic methodologies to explore representations of lesbian desires and identities in a corpus of lesbian erotica from the 1980s and 1990s. We provide a critical examination of the ways in which “lesbian gender,” power, and desire are represented, (re-)produced, and enacted, often in ways that challenge hegemonic discourses of gender and sexuality. By examining word frequencies and collocations, we critically analyze some of the themes, processes, and patterns of representation in the texts. Although rooted in linguistics, we hope this article provides an accessible, interdisciplinary, and timely contribution toward developing understandings of discursive practices surrounding gender and sexuality

The concept of sustainable development which is an attempt to shape and secure a future generation has attracted attention across disciplines and scholars of various dispositions. Adult education is the key to unlock the understanding required in securing this future. This paper therefore makes a case that effective management of adult education is required in sustainable national development.
